Dove Self-Esteem Programme

Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful and anxiety about appearance begins at an early age. 6 out of 10 girls are so concerned with the way they look, they participate less in daily life.


Dove has a vision of the world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. To achieve this vision, Dove asked bgb to partner with them to help the next generation of women develop a positive relationship with the way they look, helping them raise their self-esteem and realise their full potential.

The beginning of the 2016 school year will see the national launch of the Confident Me Workshop, a key pillar of the Dove Self-Esteem Programme. The Confident Me workshop is designed to help students aged 11-14 years build body confidence and avoid valuing themselves and others on the basis of appearance. The workshop utilises discussion, role-play, analysing examples of advertising, watching videos and completing activities, so that students gain the skills and confidence to be the best version of themselves. Body confidence and self-esteem are vital to the healthy development of all children and Dove are on a mission to reach every school-aged child in Australia and New Zealand with the Confident Me workshop.

bgb worked extensively with local and global academics and self-esteem experts to develop materials for the Confident Me workshop that would be effective in truly improving body image. Accompanying research was conducted with local teachers to ensure relevant and compelling use of language and aesthetic – a must for this ‘tricky’ age group.

The materials that bgb developed for the Confident Me workshop include:

  • the in-classroom workshop, inclusive of an interactive version to be used on interactive whiteboard for enhanced interactivity and student participation
  • videos featuring local students that highlight the constant pressure faced to value yourself and others on the basis of appearance, as well as offering real actions from students themselves that can be taken to avoid this behaviour
  • a comprehensive teachers’ guide to assist teachers with preparing and conducting the workshop and maximising workshop benefit
  • a teacher specific web-site from which teachers can learn all about the Confident Me workshop and download the free materials for use in their classrooms

A campaign has been developed to be executed throughout the 2016 school year to raise awareness of the Dove Self-Esteem Programme amongst schools and teachers, with the ultimate goal being a Confident Me workshop being conducted in classrooms throughout Australia and New Zealand.
